Mortar stains are most commonly caused in the building process as it is not always easy to keep bricks clean when laying. Factors include dark bricks with light coloured mortars, poor cleaning after the work was finished or jointed, splashes of mortar off scaffolding and wet weather all play a part towards smeared brickwork. Mortar smears are the most common reason for a brick wash.

Efflorescence is a powdery deposit of salts which forms on the surface of the bricks and joints, usually white. Temporary efflorescence is common in new brickwork as soluble salts come to the surface transported by water.

Vanadium is a yellow green colour and commonly appears on light coloured brickwork due to the salts in the brick.

Calcium stains are also white and travel to the surface by water the same as efflorescence. Calcium stain can be stubborn sometimes and requires extensive treatment.

Manganese usually occurs in brown or grey coloured bricks also due to the manganese content in the brick manufacturing process. It is a dark brown colour which presents around the edges of the bricks.

Calcium Silicate is also white but identifies as a thin film on the face of the brick, it does not rub off like efflorescence and takes an experienced cleaner to remove this type of stain.

Petrolling is iridescent blues and brown coloured stain caused by light refracting through silica. Not a common stain to deal with.

Iron stains are patches of yellow or brown stains on the face of the brick-and-mortar joint, usually occurring when contact is made by rusting nails, bolts steel lintels or can be caused by incorrect cleaning techniques while using Hydrochloric acid.

Graffiti is unfortunately quite a common stain to remove on brickwork today. The golden rule is to treat graffiti as soon as possible as the longer it is left on the bricks or blockwork the harder it is to remove. Fortunately, we have a range of chemicals to do the job.
